I think we all agree that dating through lockdown has proven to be a bit of a flop. With meeting a blind date, loved one, or an ex-file for a drink and a bite to eat in one of Birmingham’s many bars and restaurants but a distant memory. The pandemic has tested the ingenuity of daters to the max to come up with creative ways to explore the love scene in a covid secure way, but that is wearing thin now.

Ah, the cocktail, where do we start?? Once the staple of the aristocracy and drank before dinner during “The Cocktail Hour” the idea of mixing a drink can date its beginnings to 18th century Britain, where large bowls made up of spirits, fruit juices, and spices, were served in punch houses. The term cocktail its self was first seen in a British newspaper in 1798 but it wasn’t really defined until 1806 when a bar in New York explained it as “a stimulating liquor composed of any kind of sugar, water, and bitters”. Fast forward to 1862 and the first cocktail book was published by Jerry Thomas.

When asked, one of the most common responses to any question about baseball here in the UK is “It’s a bit like rounders isn’t it?”. Now, this is very true and in fact, Baseball’s inventor Alexander Cartwright did base the game on the game of rounders way back in 1845. Since then not only is Baseball America’s national pastime (even though it does lag behind American Football in popularity) but it is the national sport of plenty more countries including Japan, South Korea, and many Central American countries.
